Reading the Sky
                            Paula Meehan


We stood in the still pine shadows
with nightshade and yarrow
and read the cyphers the wild geese drew

across the violet sky.
Go south, go south, they insisted,
winter is close behind.

The moon was for a moment
a perfect golden sickle
above the golden lake.

We measured the angles of the stars
revealed by the dwindling light
and gave to them new names

learned from the geese in flight
knowing that one would follow,
one would be left behind.

We glean a common language
to describe our differing fates:
you'll be fugitive forever,

I'll wait at the brink of winter
holding off the dark
that you may escape.

私たちはハシリドコロとノコギリソウの生い茂る
しんとした松の木蔭に立ち
紫の空を横切ってゆく

雁の暗号を読み解いた
――南へ行け、南へ行け
冬が背後に迫っている――

月は今のところ
黄金の湖上に輝く
完璧な黄金の鎌だった

私たちは光が次第に弱まりゆく
星と星との角度を測り
新しい名前をつけた

そして飛行する雁から聞かされた
一人は後を追い
一人は取り残されることを知っていると…

私たちは懸命に共通の言葉を拾い始める
二人の異なる運命を表すために
――あなたは永遠に逃亡者となるだろう

私は冬の崖っぷちで待つだろう
あなたが逃げてゆく
その闇から身を離して――

◆ポーラ・ミーハン Paula Meehan  1955年、ダブリンの下町生まれ。ダブリン在住。現代アイルランドを代表する女性詩人の一人。詩集に『帰還すれば咎めなし“Return and No Blame”』(1984年)、『空にうらなう“Reading the Sky”』(1986年)、『冬の刻印を受けた男“The Man who was Marked by Winter”』(1991年)、『ピロー・トーク“Pillow Talk”』(1994年)、『ダルマカーヤ“Dharmakaya”』(2000年)などがある。その他、長年刑務所で受刑者とともに創作ワークショップを行ってきた経験から生まれた戯曲『セル“Cell”』(2000年)がある。いずれも未翻訳だが、栩木伸明著『アイルランド現代詩は語る』(2001,思潮社)に数編の訳詩が掲載されている。2006年10月、夫で詩人のテオ・ドーガンとともに来日。
